Exploration on A news event broadcast process across several kinds of SNS

Last week, the project group of social media made up of seven people talked about the subject of our task. I proposed a thought which last couldn't be chosen so I choose to record it here since I think it is fairly a nice point for us to learn about social network.

For people living in mainland, the social medias they can land are sina weibo, tecent weibo, baidu tieba and tianya and so on. Another relatively additional media is like sohu.com, which is a type of news broadcasting website. When a news or accident happens, it firstly occurs on one of these social medias and then is broadcast to other medias. During the whole process, the whole concerning degree is significantly increasing and the social media platform which firstly gives the information about this event can get the most clicking number. Another meaningful thing deserving our care is that the core point of the event is changing with time. For example, at first, it is covered that A loves B, some days later, maybe the event may turn into that A loves C. I think it is quite interesting, isn't it?

Rosanna recommends an article called as 'Quantifying social group evolution' which was presented by Palla, G., Albert-Laszlo, Barabasi. and Tamas, V. in 2007, which analyses the broadcasting relation and process among several platforms. I think it is of help for us to learn about the subject of this blog.

To learn about this, not only to find a way for advertisers to promote their products within the shortest time, but also it helps to confirm that the big information century has come. and everyone of us has various kinds of access to the information all around the world.

  3. GuiLin, I didn’t actually quite get your point, would you share more details about the outcome of your idea? Our group has a similar proposal before which is analysis the sentiment trend of majority after a significant event in a certain period, until another event response to the first event, something like government public relations. The interesting part is analysis the sentiment trend among both events and after the second event. We can see how public sentiments affect to the government or the people that involved in the event, and public’s different reflection upon the second event.

    1. I get your point. The broadcasting trend of one event is like a 'S' curve. When a similar event occurs, the former event will be prompt to finish its climbing trend or to be expanded more as soon as possible.

As for outcomes of my thought, there are several aspects. Such as, how people can promote one thing to be a big event, or which kind of event has the potential attributes to be broadcast among all the SNS, and as a editor of a website, how to edit the event information to make it more popular.... and so on.

  5. It is definite true that the social media brings us new focus everyday, which is also remains a challenge for the data mining and analytics. The analytics simple conducted by human will never follow the trend and get up with the thinking of people. In that case,a relatively fixed way in data mining needs to be found to deal with the problem.Still, thanks for sharing and have a nice day.

  7. I think your blog is about tipping point. But I don't understand why the core point change. People can use the 's' curve model to do information spreading. And on the contrary, we can use it to prevent the spreading.

    1. I think the core point change is that the press tries to contract more people and earn a higher clicking number, so the press always uses more ambiguous words to describe the event. after many steps, what people read is not the same as the reality and original version

  9. I remember you mentioned this idea in our project group meeting. If my understanding is right, the example you take is to illustrate the uncertainty of the information broadcasting between different social network platform. However, I think only from this point of view, it is hard for us to link it to the commercial value. Maybe you can share more ideas in details. :)

  10. Hello, Guilin. You mentioned some interesting topics in your blog. Some times the main media even provide some messages that are easily misunderstood to keep it attractive. Maybe it is difficult to analyze for us now, but indeed it is a significant phenomenon for nowadays SNS. Thanks for your recommendation and I will keep my attention on it.

  11. Your post remind me an interesting thing which happened at the beginning of ‘Occupy Central’. I post some photos of Mong Kok scenery on the National Day. But no one could see them. The social media websites are under supervision in Mainland China. Such kinds of posts with political sensitivity were always blocked or deleted. Even though the freedom of expression is the basic spirit of social media in Web 2.0 era, the social media barely become the sensitive or value ideas exchanging space for public.
